«Chico And Rita», The First Spanish Language Full-Length Animated Oscar Nominee

This year there is a different kind of animated movie nominated for best animated feature. It’s called «Chico and Rita» and is absolutely not kid friendly. We tend to think of animation as something for kids, but this is nonsense. Have you seen the stuff that comes out of Japan? That’s definitely not for kids, (it’s barely for adults). «Chico and Rita» tells the love story of the two titular characters set in the Cuban music and jazz world of the 40’s and 50’s. There is cartoon sex, violence, and adult themes. That’s why the movie had such a hard time finding an American distributor. Luckily, it hit theaters in the U.S. this week.

The film is the first ever Spanish language film to be nominated for best animated feature. It was created by directors Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal. They filmed real actors and handed the scenes to the animators to try and recreate the unique movement style of Cubans, Puerto Ricans, and African-Americans. The result is something startlingly realistic. Though the grand prize will probably go to something by Disney or Pixar, we’re rooting for «Chico and Rita».
