Fan Starts Brawl During Cruz Azul-Morelia Match

What should have been a joyous occasion for Morelia– they scored three goals against Cruzl Azul in the second leg of the Mexican tournament semifinals to overcome a 2-0 first leg deficit– ended in disgrace and wtf-edness after a fan started a brawl on the pitch. In the waning minutes of the match, a Morelia fan ran stormed the field to talk a little trash to Cruz Azul players. La Maquina’s Christian Gimenez didn’t take too kindly to the mockery and punched the fan.

Gimenez’s aggression snowballed into an all-out brawl between the two teams. Watching this fight unfold reminded us a lot of “The Malice In The Palace,” the infamous 2004 brawl between the Indiana Pacer, the  Detroit Pistons, and several fans. Much like that basketball brawl, a couple of players let their rage get the best of them. Cruz Azul goalkeeper Jose de Jesus Corona, for example, lost his cool and headbutted Morelia’s trainer Sergio Martin. As a result of this action, Corona was cut from the Mexican national team, which, in our opinion, is for the best.
