Japan Clinches Spot In Women’s World Cup With Amazing Goal

Everyone seems to be talking about the U.S. women’s national team and the heroics of Hope Solo & Abby Wambach, but what’s being left out of the conversation is the fact that other teams have been playing amazingly well this tournament. Teams like Japan, who eliminated host nation (and tournament favorite) Germany in the quarterfinals and convincingly beat Sweden in the semis to earn a spot in the finals.

That last match (played yesterday) is the source of today’s highlight. In the 64th minute of play, Nahomi Kawasumi lobbed the ball into the back of an unprotected net. It’s not exactly Wambach scoring at the last second, but it’s still impressive enough.
