Neymar’s Coming-Out Party In One Goal, Wins FIFA Puskas Award For Goal Of The Year [UPDATE]

Neymar, the 19-year-old Brazilian soccer star, won the FIFA Puskas Award given to the best goal of the year. Below is our original post featuring that highlight, originally published on July 28th, 2011.

For a while now, Brazilian soccer prodigy Neymar has been on our radar. Last night the 19-year-old Santos striker, during a 5-4 loss to Flamengo & Ronaldinho, made us think that in a couple of years he’s going to be the best player in the world. Why? Because of the goal above. The wunderkind set the play in motion close to the middle of the pitch, and capped off a brilliant display of offense by blowing past four Flamengo defenders before being tackled down. Of course, by that time, the ball was already making its way to the back of the net.

Amazingly, Flamengo, thanks in large part to the aging Ronaldinho (he had a hat trick), came back and snatched victory away from Neymar and his teammates. But, honestly, who cares? The fact of the matter is that by this time next year, Neymar will likely be playing abroad for Real Madrid and in 2014, will give his national team a strong chance in winning their record sixth World Cup title.
