Pepsi Now Selling As “Pecsi” In Mexico


Cola maker Pepsi is trying a new strategy in Mexico to sell its product. They are launching a series of ads rebranding their product as “Pecsi.” As the clever ad–featuring none other than Mexican soccer great Cuauhtemoc Blanco– states, about a third of the people in the Central American country have a hard time pronouncing “Pepsi.”  Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first time Pepsico has embraced this marketing strategy in Latin America. Back in 2009, the soda maker advertised itself as “Pecsi” in Argentina to much success. They are trying to do the same in Mexico. Not sure about you guys, but we kind of dig the fact that Pepsico doesn’t take itself too seriously to change their name like this.

    A comment: Mexico is not Central America, although 12% of its territory is in Central America geographically speaking, Mexico is NORTH AMERICA… believe it or not

True, the ad clearly says “33.888% of MEXICANS…” and it’s also true that it’s internationally accepted that Mexico is one of the countries that form north america, along with the U.S. and Canada. But this is not the point of this article. I personally thing that pepsico is, indeed not taking too seriously their name, but also I think that this is bad too because they’re promoting that people talk the way they want, and the language is created for some reason, and they created their name for a reason, and it’s to be said PEPSI. I take it they’re telling people “speak the way you want, change words and twist your language at your will, instead of learning and try to be a better person”.

    Maybe i’m taking it too seriously but it’s just my opinion anyway.

      No, they’re saying “so there’s nothing we can do to make them spell the name correctly… yeah, let’s make some money out of it. This smells like a potential marketing strategy”. As you can see, PEPSICO doesn’t think Pepsi is meant to be said “Pepsi” whenever there’s money at stake. Great move.

      You are taking it too seriously.  Language evolves.  It is alive.  Of course you should speak the way you want.  Changing and twisting of words is normal.
