“Silent House” Viral Ad Explains Why Latinos Are Not Cast In Horror Films

This is the latest viral ad campaign for the horror film Silent House— a remake of the 2010 Uruguayan film by the same name– and it basically jokes that Latinos aren’t cast in American horror films because we’re too smart for that crap. A Latino inside a haunted house? ‘Tas pendejo! Ni madres que that would ever happen.

The video is obviously pandering to the Latino audience and making fun of white people, which we’ll let it slide because… well it’s fun to ridicule white people. As a friend of ours pointed out, this ad borrows from the black comedian trope of colored folk would never do anything stupid on film. This is best exemplified by the great Gil Scott Heron on his bit about JAWS:

We should note that while Hispanics might not be cast in these films, our directors and writers contribute greatly to the genre. One only needs to look at the Alfonso Cuarons, the Guillermo Del Toros, and even the Nacho Vigalondos to see that we’re at the forefront of horror and fantasy.
