Tu Vez Blast-From-The-Past Truck: El Chavo Del Ocho

Marty McFly and Doc Brown had the Delorean to go travel through time; We have the Tu Vez Blast-From-The-Past Truck. Every week, we’ll hop in our time traveling machine, gun it to 88 MPH, and go back in time to bring you the best from the good ol’ days. Will it be a clip from an old telenovela? An old school music video? Stick around and find out!

In the annals of Hispanic children’s programming one name rises above all of the other lesser gueys: Roberto Gomez Bolaños, better known as Chespirito. For decades, he has entertained millions of Spanish-speaking kids as well as some stoned college students up at 3am. His ineffective insectoid superhero Chapulin Colorado was the basis of The Simpsons’ Bumblebee Man who, according to Matt Groening, stars in every show on the Spanish networks.

His most iconic character is El Chavo Del Ocho, a homeless but kind-hearted kid living inside a barrel at an apartment building complex in Mexico. His daily misadventures with friends La Chilindrina, Quico, and Ñoño are so popular that they have survived in constant syndication 30 years after the show was cancelled and  have recently begun airing on the Brazilian Cartoon Network. For this week’s video we’ve selected the theme song for El Chavo Del Ocho, a song which features El Chavo’s trademark phrase (“Fue sin querer queriendo”).

You can take your Bob Esponja, kid. We’ll stick to El Chavo.
