WTF: Audience at Republican Presidential Debates Boo «Mexico»

This video is equal parts infuriating and disheartening. At last night’s umpteenth Republican Presidential debates held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the audience started booing when Juan Williams uttered the word «Mexico,» in reference to the birthplace of Mitt Romney’s father’s birthplace.

To be fair, it’s likely that the audience though they were booing Texaco because of the rising of price of gas.

I’m not too surprised by the Republicans lack of class. In past debates, the mention of a gay soldier was met with the same derision, and a group of teabaggers cheered at the prospect of letting uninsured Americans die.

Still, the lack of humanity is depressing and embittering. So much so that I actively hope anti-immigration (which in this country is synonymous with anti-Latino) initiatives blow up in their faces. Evidence of this has already been seen in states like Georgia, who’s HB 87 has resulted in millions of dollars rotting away on its farms and fields because there were no immigrants around to pick them.

My only solace lies in the fact that things will change. And to paraphrase Rorschach from Alan Moore’s Watchmen, when the tables turn and it’s they who’ll «look up and shout ‘Save us!’…I’ll look down and whisper ‘No.'»
