Who Cares What Sean Penn Has To Say About Latin America?

Sean Penn is at it again. And by “At it”, I mean sticking his rich, White, Hollywood nose in Latin American affairs. His latest self-righteous diatribe is directed at the British over their continuing dispute with Argentina over the Falkland Islands. Tensions have been rising between the two countries since it was announced that Prince William will visit the islands with a big military escort. Sean Penn said the British were itching to start a war and that they are overly sensitive because of their colonial legacy. He criticized the British government and called for action on the part of the U.N. The Falkland Islands have been disputed territory between Argentina and Britain since the Falklands war in 1982. Argentina and Britain are trying to hash it out diplomatically. But that’s a separate issue. My point is: Who the F asked Sean Penn his opinion and why does anyone care what he has to say?

Every time I turn around, Sean Penn is in Latin America having dinner with Hugo Chavez, meeting with Raul Castro, or hob-knobbing with some other leftist Latin American leader. Seriously, what the hell does a rich Hollywood celebrity know about the problems of Latin America? For all his pandering, I’m sure Sean wouldn’t want to give up his rich mansion and eating at nice restaurants to live on a ration card like they do in Cuba or have his work censored like they do in Venezuela.

It’s not just him either. Oliver Stone, Susan Sarandon, Angelina Jolie, and countless other Hollywood morons are always shooting their mouths off about Latin American affairs. You guys dress up and play pretend for a living. This gives you no insight into the legacy of colonialism or corruption in Latin America. Their rhetoric tends to be paternalistic and condescending, just another form of racism. It’s like saying, “I’m going to validate what all you cute little Latin people are saying with my shiny rich American fame”. I’ll give Sean Penn the work his organization has done in Haiti. But that’s what these people are ultimately good for, throwing money at a problem. So, by all means sign a check to a worthy cause but keep your rich celebrity mouth shut and out of real world problems.
