Will A Latin American Team Win The 2014 World Cup?

With the world watching the World Cup we ask ourselves if a Latin American team can become world champion in the world of futbol.  To answer that question we will look at the top teams in Latin American.

In group A we have Mexico and Brazil.  Brazil is the host team and with home-field advantage is a favorite to win it all. On thing to keep in mind is the host team has won the tournament six times, Uruguay ’30, Italy ’34, England ’66, West Germany ’74, Argentina ’78, France ’98. and lets not forget Brazil has won the World Cup five times.

Mexico, which can be a very dangerous team hungry to win.  Led by it’s veteran Captain, Rafa Marquez and young talented starts like Giovani Dos Santos and Javier Hernández Balcázar (Chicharito), El Tri can surprise the world.

In group B we have Chile, lead by their two world class players, Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sánchez. Chile’s style of play could catch Spain off guard.

In group C we have Colombia, whose odds of winning the world cup diminished when they found out that Radamel Falcao would not be in the World Cup. Regardless, Colombia has a strong team lead by James Rodríguez, and Teófilo Gutiérrez, of River Plate. Colombia could find themselves in the quarter finals.

In group D we have Uruguay, with fifteen players returning from the last World Cup, age may be the question for this team.  How much can the 35 year old Diego Forlán carry the team.

In Group E we have Ecuador. Their strength lies on their top players Jefferson Montero and Antonio Valencia. We will see how far they get with France and Switzerland in the same group, they may have a hard time.

In Group F we have Argentina. With their four talented players, Ángel di María, Sergio AgüeroGonzalo Higuaín and Lionel Messi, Argentina is favored to win the World Cup. The only question is their shaky defense.

I would say that the odds are in favor for a Latin American team to win the 2014 World Cup and re-claim the title from Spain, who won it all in 2010.
