Yoani Sanchez Launches Dissident Cuban Digital Newspaper

Cuban dissident blogger Yoani Sanchez is going to launch her own digital newspaper called 14ymedio. The site will feature writers and topics criticizing the Castro government and telling the world what life in Cuba is really like. Yoani has been an outspoken critic of the regime for years on her blog Generation Y. She’s suffered persecution and intimidation at the hands of the state controlled media. Yoani says that,

“14ymedio is being born with nothing to hide. The information with regard to its editorial line, ethical commitments and finances, will be able to be read on the Web page that will be operating starting next May 21.”

It’s been difficult in the past for Yoani to even get her blog out, I’m not sure how she’s going to do this. I know from my family’s experience on the island that internet access is tightly curbed. It’s almost impossible to get internet if the government doesn’t want you to have it. Even if you are one of the lucky few to have access, it is like the internet connection you had in 1995. Yoani is definitely brave for even attempting to launch this digital newspaper. It will be interesting to see what happens.
