‘Blue Beetle’ Movie Will Feature First Latino Superhero Lead

The DC universe is finally diversifying a little bit. The Blue Beetle movie will begin production next year and is thought to come out in 2020. Blue Beetle is famous for being one of the only Latino superheroes in comic book history, along with Miles Morales from Spider-Man. So far Mexican writer Gareth Dunnet-Alocer has been brought on as as screenwriter and Zev Foreman as executive producer. Blue Beetle is a recent superhero, created in 2006 by Keith Giffen, John Rogers and Cully Hammer and tells the story of Jaime Reyes from El Paso, TX. He’s a young Mexican-American kid who discovers a scarab beetle tool that gives him crazy tech turning him into the Blue Beetle.

The most exciting thing for me is that this might be our “Black Panther Moment“. I wrote that when I saw Black Panther I had the thought that this was an amazing moment for Black youth, finally seeing a hero that looked like them. The Afro-Futurism of Wakanda was amazing. I speculated as to when our film was going to come, our faces reflected on the screen. DC believes this will be a great moment to celebrate representation. I agree. The only thing that worries me is that it is a DC movie and sometimes, (most of the time), they suck.
