Donald Trump Burned In Effigy All Across Mexico

Yesterday was Easter, a day when many of us spend time with our families, go to church, and eat chocolate. But Saturday night in Mexico many people took to the streets to burn Republican presidential front runner Donald Trump in Effigy. It is part of an old tradition in many Latin American countries to burn a figure representing Judas Iscariot, the disciple who betrayed Jesus, in effigy as a sort of symbolic revenge. It’s a way of seeking justice. So, it’s not really a surprise that the man who has demonized the Mexican people in particular, calling them rapists and murderers, would get the Judas treatment. Not that Trump “betrayed” the Mexican people, per se. He was never their ally to betray them, but I certainly get their anger.

One thing that I think about if Trump does become president is how he will even be able to deal with Mexico in any real way after all he’s said. They are our immediate neighbors to the south and a huge trading partner but he has completely alienated them. While I don’t see them cutting diplomatic ties, I certainly think any negotiations are going to be rough. Especially if he starts yammering on about Mexico paying for a giant wall across the border. Let’s hope that this will be the last year where Trump is in the news enough to warrant Mexicans burning him in effigy.
