Gina Rodriguez Might Be In Star Wars Episode VIII

Jane The Virgin‘s Gina Rodriguez is in talks to play a new and prominent character in Star Wars Episode VIII. The movie, which will be directed by Rian Johnson, will begin filming next year. Also in talks is Bates Motel‘s Olivia Cooke and Tatiana Maslany from Orphan Black. Rodriguez has been brought in for “chemistry reads” with Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega. Could that mean a romantic interest for Boyega? Who knows? The plot and characters of these new Star Wars films is a closely guarded secret. All we can do is speculate. Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro has also been in talks with Disney to play the villain in Episode VIII. If that’s true than a long-standing imbalance in the Force will be addressed. Namely, the lack of Latinos in the Star Wars universe.

Not that there were a lot of non-White people in the original trilogy. Pretty much just Lando. But as far as Latinos go the only one to ever be in the films was Jimmy Smitts in the prequels. And really, does that even count? He played senator Organa  who adopts Princess Leia at the end of the third film. But I’d hate to think that a role in those craptacular prequels is the only time there is a Latino in Star Wars.
