Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton” Sweeps Tonys

In what comes as absolutely no surprise to anyone, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit musical Hamilton swept the Tony awards on Sunday. The hip-hop musical about founding father Alexander Hamilton won 11 out of 13 Tonys. Given that there were categories in which multiple cast members were nominated there was no way they could have won all 13, so 11 is pretty much a sweep. The show was the favorite to win Best Musical, which it did, but also the other awards. I live in New York City and I can tell you that Hamilton is a genuine cultural phenomenon. Thousands of people enter the lottery for tickets every day and the show is sold out a year in advance.

Another milestone at the Tonys, every acting category in the musical genre was won by a person of color. It just goes to show you how diverse Broadway is as compared to Hollywood. I’m not sure why this is. Perhaps the power brokers in LA are more racist than the power brokers in New York. I’m not sure. What I do know is that things have changed a lot from when I was young and theater was lily white. So, you go Lin-Manuel, you are winning and opening doors for us all.
