Canelo or Mayweather, who’s the JUAN?

By:Pilo (

We are less than a week from the explosive, long-awaited fight between Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) and Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26 KO’s). There has been lots of hype for this fight; in fact, I recently got a call from one of my primos asking me if he should bet for Mayweather or Canelo. My initial thought was, come on man, you’re Mexican…you have to go for Canelo. While that made sense to me, he said something that caught my ear, which was “My heart really wants Canelo to win but my mind is telling me to place a bet on Money Mayweather”.
This brings an interesting point, one of the worst things you can be called is a malinchista, which refers to a disloyal Mexican. The term is derived from La Malinche who was a Nahua woman from the Mexican Gulf Coast, who played a role in the Spanish conquest of Mexico, acting as interpreter, advisor, lover, and intermediary for Hernán Cortés (Spanish Conquistador). She was called a traitor for this, arguably.I have heard many people refer to other Latinos as Malinches or Malinchista for favoring Money Mayweather instead of Canelo. Of course there are other terms used, depending on where you’re from, my family calls them Contreras.
Contreras is a popular Spanish surname but it is meant as for someone who goes for the contrarioor the contrary, hence Contreras. There are always these type of people in every sports venue….some don’t know anything about sports but they want to be different or be the rudo (bad guy) and go for the opposite team or fighter.
These are usually the people that love to get everyone mad in the room; I have to admit I am guilty of sometimes doing this.My humble opinion is that if Mayweather does not run around the ring all night, Canelo has a great chance of knocking him out but if Money Mayweather does he’s usual running miles in the ring, it will be a tough fight for Canelo to win. With all this said my heart is with Canelo but to place a bet, that would be a different story knowing of the recent upsets and disappointments we have been facing in the Vegas’ decisions.
If I do place a bet with my mind and not my heart, I will be betting for Money Mayweather and if he loses the fight and I lose my money, it will probably be the only time I would be happy about losing. My question to you, the reader, is, does going for Mayweather make you a malinchista or a Contreras? Who will you be going for on September 14th and why?
