MSNBC Apologizes For Racist Cinco De Mayo Stunt

MSNBC has officially apologized for covering Cinco de Mayo in the worst way possible. We told you yesterday about a segment on their show “Way Too Early” in which anchor Thomas Roberts explained the origin of the holiday while correspondent Louis Burgdorf drank tequila while wearing a sombrero. MSNBC’s apology tried to explain what the hell they were thinking when they greenlit the segment. They say that they were trying to do some cultural commentary on how Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in the U.S. and not to perpetuate stereotypes. They said,

“On Monday, Cinco De Mayo, ‘Way Too Early’ made sarcastic references to the way some Americans celebrate the holiday. It was not our intention to be disrespectful and we sincerely apologize for the ill-advised references.”

Ah, yes the old “We were just being racist to be ironic” defense. That has been used by many a White person to defend unacceptable behavior. It’s not the job of a bunch of White dudes on MSNBC to comment on the way Latinos are portrayed by mainstream society. That’s up to people like us at TuVez. Just report your stories and steer clear of trying to “help” us Latinos, you’re only making it worse.
