Number of Illegal Cuban Immigrants Caught by Coast Guard Drops

In the month of April the U.S. Coast Guard did not intercept any Cubans trying to sail illegally to the U.S. One reason why is the new policies set by both the Obama and Trump administration. Just before leaving office, President Obama repealed what was know as the “wet-foot, dry-foot” policy, where Cubans who reached U.S. shores were allowed to stay while those caught in transit at sea were sent back.

Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft said in an interview, “April was the first month in seven years where we didn’t have one Cuban migrant. On a typical day at this time last year, we would probably pick up anywhere from 50 to 150 Cuban migrants.”

Another reason for the drop in numbers is the recent Trump’s tough immigration policies, which include the push for a border wall with Mexico and the travel ban into the U.S. Cuban’s are not the only ones not coming over, since Trump’s first month in office the number of people crossing illegally from Mexico has also dropped.
