Selena’s Father Sues To Stop Selena TV Show

The late Tejano superstar Selena Quintanilla-Perez’s father Abraham Quintanilla Jr. is suing her husband Chris Perez for attempting to make a TV series about her life. We told you last week about the plan for Endemol Media to make a television series about Selena and Chris’ romance based on Chris’ autobiography To Selena, With Love. Her father Abraham isn’t having it. According to him, Chris signed a contract that he could not create a movie, book, or TV series without the consent of Selena’s official estate which is controlled by Quintanilla. According to the suit,

“The petition states Mr. Perez violated the Entertainment Properties agreement. He doesn’t have the rights to publish a book or produce a television series based in any part on Selena.”

If Chris did in fact sign that agreement it is going to be very difficult for him to proceed. Quintanilla has been very strict in what he will allow Selena’s image and music to be used. He is also known to not be the biggest fan of Chris Perez. Abraham was a bit of a tyrant and exacted control over Selena’s career and life until Chris came along. When I first heard about the Selena TV show I had a feeling that Abraham was going to come after Chris for doing it. You could cynically look at it as Abraham being pissed that he isn’t going to get any money for this project rather than an attempt to protect Selena’s memory. I think the truth is somewhere in the middle.
