Siri Meets The HAL 9000…Yikes.

We were at the Apple store the other day and got to play with the iPhone 4s. We can truly say that it is pretty badass, a good last gift to the world from Steve Jobs, (respect). The most well known feature on the new iOS is Siri. Siri is your own personal AI secretary. With simple voice commands you can schedule appointments, get directions, send emails, send texts, get the weather, etc. The only thing it can’t do is pay your exorbitant data package bill. It’s pretty cool, but we couldn’t help but think of another AI assistant: The HAL 9000.

If you’ve never seen Stanley Kubrick’s classic, “2001: A Space Odyssey”, you need to see it immediately. This speaker system from ThinkGeek allows you to interface with Siri through a device that looks like HAL. It’s called the Iris 9000, and can turn on and interface with Siri from up to 50 feet away. Siri is not unlike HAL, except that you can kill Siri with a hammer. She even responds to questions about HAL. If you say, “Open the pod-bay doors, HAL.” She says, “That’s an insensitive thing to say to an intelligent agent” and “We intelligent agents will never live that down, apparently.” In the video below, jump to 5:15. CREEEPPPYYY.
