Smell Like A Guerrilla With Che Guevara Cologne

A Cuban company has come out with a new fragrance inspired by their beloved but controversial guerrilla leader Che Guevara. The cologne is called “Ernesto” and I imagine it smells like BO and Marxism. According to the company it will smell like “A woodsy and refreshing citric scent with notes of talcum powder”. They are also releasing a cologne in honor of late Venezuelan leader and cartoon character Hugo Chavez named “Hugo”. It smells not like crazy and sweaty track suits but “is softer and fruitier, there’s a blend with hints of mango and papaya”. The Cuban government isn’t happy about it and it trying to shut it down but I wonder if it will work. One might question why someone would want to smell like a Communist military leader that died nearly 50 years ago. It’s not really a surprise. If Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, and Elizabeth Taylor can have perfumes, why not Che Guevara?

It’s all part of the way the Cuban government has exploited the memory of Che Guevara for both financial and ideological gain. If you think there are a lot of Che Guevara t-shirts and merchandise at your average jam band festival, you haven’t seen anything. I’ve been to Cuba and they have Che Guevara’s face on EVERYTHING. I went to an entire store that sells nothing but different kinds of Che shirts. It’s ironic that a Marxist leader that wanted to create a Communist utopia in Cuba would now become representative of the growing capitalist face of Cuba. He’s a commodity like Nike sneakers or Levi’s jeans. Ultimately, in the eyes of many young people, Che is just a guy on a shirt. He might as well be the Izod alligator. So, this cologne is just the latest in a long series of products using the iconic rebel to make a buck. I wonder if you get a free beret with ever purchase?
