Trump Threatens To Rollback Cuba Reforms

Well, that didn’t take long. Soon after the death of former Cuban president Fidel Castro, president-elect Donald Trump took to Twitter to say that he will undo president Obama’s executive actions on Cuba if the Cuban government doesn’t meet his demands. He Tweeted,

“If Cuba is unwilling to make a better deal for the Cuban people, the Cuban-American people and the U.S. as a whole, I will terminate [the] deal.”

His incoming White House chief of Staff Reince Priebus reiterated that they will reverse American policy on Cuba unless the Castro government concedes to reforms. What exactly those are is a mystery. Probably the release of political prisoners and an easing of repression against political dissidents and more religious freedom. It is difficult to say what Trump will do. In March, during the primaries, he was the only Republican nominee that was for engagement with any kind with Cuba. Then when he visited South Florida in July he promised Cuban-Americans that he would unequivocally close Cuba again. Now he’s saying he is open to keeping it open but wants a better deal. There is a big part of Trump that knows that closing Cuba is a stupid move economically. I know he wants a Trump hotel or three in Cuba. I’m banking on his greed. The U.S. stands to make billions on Cuba from tourism, agriculture, oil, and other interests if the embargo were lifted. If we don’t make that money then Germany or Canada will. Don’t let Marco Rubio boss you around, Mr. president-elect.
