CONCACAF Gold Cup Top Pick: Giovani dos Santos’ Genius Lob Goal

We know the CONCACAF Gold Cup final was disputed on Saturday night, but we’d be remiss to not mention the 76th minute by Mexican striker Giovani dos Santos. The Racing Santander (Spain) attacking midfielder was a  nuisance to the American defensive line for most of the match, using his ridiculous youthful speed to blow past them and take several shots that were short of being goals. Gio’s relentless attack, however, finally paid off in the second half of the match. In a stroke of genius individual play, dos Santos masterfully controlled the ball (is it cliche to say that it was Messi-like?), making everyone around him look like a fool. Tim Howard, the poor U.S. men’s national team goalkeeper who was severely hurt by his team’s poor defense, could do nothing but flop and crawl in an attempt to take the ball away from Giovani. Obviously, he failed. Gio chipped the ball, which sailed no more than two inches over the head of Eric Lichaj and into the top left corner of the mark, making it 4-2 in favor of Mexico.\
