Glenn Beck Doesn’t Care For Miles Morales, The Blacktino Spider-Man

Looks like we’re not the only ones who had an opinion on Miles Morales— a half-black, half-Latino character– becoming the new Ultimate Spider-Man. Your (not so) friendly, neighborhood (if you live in a gated community) fear-monger had a few choice words to say. Earlier on his radio show (who the hell listens to radio nowadays?), Glenn Beck blamed Michelle Obama for de-whitefying Spider-Man and making him into a gay, mixed-raced character.

To be exact, his words (and actions) were:

“I think a lot of this stuff is being done intentionally. What was it that Mrs. Obama said before the campaign? Because its strange how so much of this seems to all be happening,” he said. Beck then played an audio file of Michelle Obama saying that “we’re gonna have to change our traditions.” — Frum Forum

He then adds: “Really? We now have a half-black, half-Hispanic, gay Spider-man? (beat)… Okay.”

Okay, Beck. Miles Morales, as far as we know (and we know more than you do about comic books because we picked up the issue first thing in the morning), is not gay. Not that it matters to us. For you, however, it does. Why? Because wrongfully and intentionally making his sexual orientation different from yours– and from your viewers and listeners– makes it easier to “other” a fictional character (fictional!) and turn your fan base against an initiative that’s trying to be progressive. As if a non-white, mixed race super hero wasn’t enough!

Forget what we said yesterday. If Glenn Beck– a man whose shoe size is bigger than his IQ, a man who has made a hefty living by adding fuel to the fires that divide our country– is against Miles Morales, we wholeheartedly support Marvel’s new venture. Because, seriously, f-ck that guy.
