Not The Kind Of Alabama I Want

About three weeks we wrote a piece in which we argued that Demian Bichir’s Oscar nomination wasn’t entirely a good thing for the Latino community. Our principal argument was that the nomination validated films by white directors trying to tell a Latino story. While we still largely believe that, we do think we owe a huge apology to Chris Weitz, director of A Better Life (the film for which Bichir earned his nomination). Since penning that piece we’ve become aware of the “Is This Alabama?” campaign, a project led by– you guessed it– Chris Weitz that takes a look at the human cost of Alabama’s extreme anti-immigration bill H.B. 56.

In short, we were partially wrong. Chris Weitz is doing good work, and you should support it by checking out their homepage.
