Whitehouse.Gov Removes All Spanish Language Content

In a move that is in no way surprising, the Trump White House website has removed all Spanish language content from the site. Under recent administrations there had been a small number of pages with important information that was provided in both English and Spanish. This expanded under Barack Obama to include much of its content. But President Trump isn’t having any of that. Along with webpages on LGBT rights, civil rights, climate change, and reproductive rights, the Spanish language content has also disappeared in the days after his inauguration. We can’t really be surprised as he said this during the campaign,

“We have a country where to assimilate, you have to speak English. We have to have assimilation to have a country. We have to have assimilation. … This is a country where we speak English, not Spanish.”

This ignores the fact that we have always been a country of diverse languages and that recent immigrant communities often prefer to speak in their native tongue among themselves. If you went to a German or Czech immigrant community in my native Texas in the late 19th and early 20th century, you would have found a group of people speaking their national language. If you go today to any Chinatown or other ethnic enclave you will find the same thing. So, why single out Spanish?

It’s true that it is the second most spoken language in the U.S. However in our cultures, as with other immigrant group, the original immigrants mainly speak their native tongue while their children probably speak both fluently. By the time you get to the second generation it is rare for them to know the mother tongue at all. So, what’s the big deal? It’s clear that this is a further attempt to whitewash America, to make us all homogeneous. It’s OK for you to be non-White as long as you act White.
